More than a year after the devastating earthquake struck Haiti, restoration is taking place and hundreds of thousands of people are still living in tent camps. But aid from SEB and other companies has made a difference.
The earthquake caused massive destruction in the impoverished country. Between 200,000 and 300,000 people were killed and around 1.3 million lost their homes. The need for help was enormous and SEB decided to donate 1 million SEK to support the efforts of Save the Children. SEB’s customers and colleagues raised another 500,000 SEK, leading to a total donation of 1.5 million SEK.
According to Gary Shaye, country director of Save the Children in Haiti, the support from SEB and other corporations was essential:
"Thanks to the support, we were able to implement a massive effort to protect children, both in the acute emergency phase and in longer-term efforts to reunite them with their families and create conditions to provide for health care and education."
